HALESOWEN councillors have put party politics aside in their bid to increase road safety in their community.

Cllrs Stuart Henley (UKIP), Karen Shakespeare (Conservative) and Hilary Bills (Labour), who represent Halesowen North on Dudley Council, have responded to complaints from residents about dangerous roads and speeding drivers.

The three ward members, who head up the Shell Corner Partnership, have teamed up to buy a laser speed gun so they can collect data and report it to the police.

Cllr Henley said: “All three of us have had numerous complaints from residents across Halesowen about dangerous roads and speeding drivers.

“Unfortunately the police haven’t got the staff or a speed gun to deal with the problem, but about a year-and-a-half ago I went on ebay and got a cheap gun so we could go out together and record data which we could provide to the old sergeant.

“But recently, the Shell Corner Partnership group have got together and bought a top-of-the-range gun which we can now use when doing our community speed watch.

“We have also made it available for the police to borrow.”

The councillors are inviting all local residents to join in with the partnership group’s activities, including speed watch and litter picks.

Cllr Henley added: “We are always looking for members to take part in various events around the community.

“It is a non-political group so it doesn’t matter what party you support, we all just want to make our area a better place for everyone.”
