UNIVERSITY of Worcester student Kathryn Emerson has been shortlisted for a Midlands media award for a magazine she produced on her degree course.

Kathryn, who graduates in November, is one of only two students shortlisted in the 2017 Birmingham Press Club organised Midlands Media Awards.

Her magazine, Venture, was produced in her final year and she is one of five finalists in the magazine/supplement category.

With over 200 entries for the awards, Kathryn competes against five existing publications: ArtsBeat, Birmingham Living, Midlands Business Insider, Shropshire Business and Birmingham 2022.

A separate student award event was not held this year but students were invited to compete in the main competition.

Kathryn and a student from Staffordshire University were the only two to be shortlisted.

Kathryn’s travel magazine was described as “excellent” by Craig Hooper, the external examiner for the University of Worcester journalism course.

She gained paid work at BBC Radio Shropshire during her final year and is now employed as a broadcast assistant.

Kathryn said: “I’m so humbled and proud to have my magazine shortlisted, it was a real labour of love and something I thoroughly enjoyed creating.

"It means a great deal to see that it has been enjoyed and acknowledged by the judges.”

Course leader Rachel Ammonds praised Kathryn.

“Kathryn is a talented multi-media journalist, who can turn her strong ideas into engaging content," she said. "I am sure she is at the beginning of a great career in journalism.”

The previous winner of the Midlands Media Student of the Year award is University of Worcester graduate Conor Rees, who also submitted a magazine, 99 Percent, which has now gone into production.

Worcester News' Geoff Berkeley has been shortlisted in the Sports Journalism of the Year category for the Press Club contest.

This year’s awards will be handed out on November 2 at Canalside in The Cube, Birmingham.
