CANDLES can kill or cause injury fire chiefs warn, as they try to eliminate potential dangers this winter.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is issuing a warning to mark Candle Fire Safety Week (October 16-22).
Candle fires result in around 300 casualties in England each year and one in three of all fires nationally started by candles result in a death or injury.
People are advised to make sure they have a working smoke alarm and keep the candles away from flammable materials such as curtains, and to make sure candles are put out when they leave the room even for a moment.
Candles should be put out with a snuffer or a spoon as sparks can fly if you blow them out.
Households should also plan an escape route in case of emergency.
Station Commander Stuart Crebbin said: "Candles are a typical sight in many homes, but it’s important to remember that a candle is not just a decorative feature. Left unattended, an open flame scenting your home could leave a trail of devastation."
