KINGTON’s Thai restauranteurs Allan and Now Clarke want to give something back to a cancer support charity after what has been a traumatic two years for them.

A former electrician, Allan had to quit his job two years ago after an accident which left him with a broken back. Needing to find a new source of income, he and his wife opened Sawadee restaurant, based at the Royal Oak pub in Church Street. Business was going “really well” for them until Now was diagnosed with leukaemia.

“It was a huge shock,” says Allan. “We were told it was very unlikely she could be cured.”

Last week, however, the couple were told that Now’s cancer is in remission.

“Although she will still need further treatment, things are looking good,” says Allan. ‘Now’ is his wife’s nickname - her proper name is Saowalak – and the name of their restaurant, Sawadee, translates as ‘Hello’.

Royal Oak landlord Casey Floyd took over the pub four years ago, and last year Allan and Now launched their business in the Oak’s restaurant, an arrangement that is working well for both pub and Thai food customers.

A delighted Allan explains about Now’s news: “Having received the all clear, we want to give something back having received such amazing support from the hospital and Macmillan.”

Earlier this week, a Macmillan Cancer Support curry night was held at the Royal Oak and Sawadee in hopes of raising funds for the charity, as well as raising an awareness of the work carried out by Macmillan.

“It’s been a rotten time,” says Allan, “but now it’s time to say thank you for all the help we’ve received.”

He added: “We’re just hoping things are not going to happen in threes!”
