HISTORY experts hope to uncover a secret world as they map the remains of a former Roman farmstead using the latest technology.

The people of Worcester have a unique opportunity to join the city council and become geophysicists for a day as they discover more about what life was like in Roman times.

On Tuesday, October 24 members of the public have a free opportunity to join a geophysics team who will use specialist equipment to map the remains of a former Roman farmstead near Mabbs Close in Trotshill, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0SY.

The project has been made possible thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund on behalf of lottery players.

Worcester City Council is also contributing £9,300 worth of Section 106 funding - money developers contribute to provide infrastructure for the benefit of local communities.

A further contribution of £500 has been made on behalf of Cllr Andy Roberts, from the Worcestershire County Councillors’ Divisional Fund.

The results of the survey will help to identify the remains of structures or traces of human activities left in the soil.

An archaeological dig will then take place at the site in November, and members of the public will again have the opportunity to participate.

James Dinn, archaeological officer at Worcester City Council. said: “This is a rare opportunity to uncover the past and learn more about the lives of Roman citizens who were in the Trotshill area.

“We want to establish the layout of the houses and to search for pottery and other remains which give clues about the kind of life they lived.”

Once the excavation is complete, part of the land at this location will be converted into allotments which Worcester residents will have the opportunity to hire in the future.

If you are interested in joining the geophysics team just turn up on the day. People of all ages are welcome to participate.

The exercise will take place between 10am and 4pm.

Please wear sensible footwear and waterproof clothing.

If you would like to take part in the excavation in November, you can email archaeology@worcester.gov.uk.

Limited car parking is available in the allotment car park at Mabbs Close (WR4 0SY), or there is more on street parking on Dugdale Drive.
