A MAJOR fire which ripped through a Kidderminster industrial estate overnight is now being scaled back by firefighters.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and West Mercia Police have been responding to the severe fire on Firs Industrial Estate, Oldington Lane, since 11.30pm yesterday evening (Monday, October 23).

The building was evacuated and nobody was injured in the fire and no health issues have been reported.

The road through the industrial estate has since reopened following a closure and people are no longer being advised to stay in their properties and keep their windows and doors shut.

Group Commander Mick Cadman from HWFR said: “We received the report of the fire at 11.25pm and 10 fire appliances have been used over the course of the night.

“There are chemicals on site but I would like to reassure people that all the appropriate precautions are being taken. At this time we have not identified any health issues. Air quality is being monitored in the area and should the situation change we will advise local people.

“The building where the fire started was in use at the time but it was evacuated and there are no reported casualties.

“It is likely that we will be on site for the rest of day.

“I'd like to thank local people for their support and patience while we manage this serious incident.”

During the height of the blaze, a 600m cordon was put in around the site due to hazardous materials which could have caught alight.

People living in the area around the trading estate and the areas around Stourport Road and Birchen Coppice were also asked to stay indoors and keep their windows shut as a precaution.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
