WORCESTER city centre has been plunged into chaos as flood water has made roads impassable.

The New Road bridge has been closed and Hylton Road - one of the main routes into the city - is under several feet of water.

The Severn View Hotel in Newport Street is surrounded by water and The Old Rectifying House in nearby North Parade is flooded.

The one-way system at the Cathedral roundabout and Deansway are also closed.

Interestingly these 2 hotels were always flooded in the 50's & 60's until work was done on the Quays leading to Newport Street. New Road was also regularly flooded. The difference now is no railway service setting off at Henwick and all the other small halts and villages. Also the dredgers on the river were a regular site keeping the rivers able to transport oil tankers from Skarkness, Gloucester etc.
