A TEMPORARY Museum shop was opened in the Guildhall yesterday.

The shop, on the ground floor of the north wing of the Guildhall, will be the temporary home for the Museum of Royal Worcester during its redevelopment.

The move will also allow the Museum's shop to be open seven days a week for the first time in its history.

It will also use the temporary shop to showcase its plans for the redevelopment, promote its new activities and generate income during its temporary closure.

The shop was opened by the Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Steve Mackay, on Wednesday.

He said: “It’s a great honour to open the temporary home of one of Worcester’s most renowned attractions.

"I am so pleased that the city council has been able to help the Museum keep its much-loved shop open while the building undergoes an exciting refurbishment.”

Sir Michael Perry, chairman of the museum, said: “The museum’s trustees are deeply grateful to the city council for providing a temporary home for the shop.”

The Museum of Royal Worcester is currently closed for a major gallery refurbishment.

The £1.7 million museum redevelopment has largely made possible by a National Lottery grant of £1.4 million awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The new temporary home for the Royal Museum has a six month lease, which the council has given them at no cost.

The shop will have its own dedicated entrance.
