A UNIVERSITY of Worcester student has won a media award for a magazine she produced on her degree course.

Kathryn Emerson triumphed in the Midlands Media Awards on Thursday night – just hours after her graduation ceremony at Worcester Cathedral.

The 22-year-old's travel magazine, Venture, which she produced in her final year, was among five finalists in the magazine/supplement category.

With over 200 entries for the awards, Kathryn competed against five existing publications: ArtsBeat, Birmingham Living, Midlands Business Insider, Shropshire Business and Birmingham 2022.

She was presented with her award by veteran TV presenter Bob Warman at the ceremony at Canalside, Birmingham.

She told the Worcester News: "This is amazing – I am really honoured."

The Birmingham Press Club-organised awards did not include a separate student category this year but students were invited to compete in the main competition.

Kathryn and a student from Staffordshire University were the only two to be shortlisted.

Claire Wolfe, principal lecturer in journalism at the university, was there to see Kathryn win on Thursday night.

Claire said: “Students on the BA (Hons) course have been consistently achieving success and winning awards that help them to gain work in a multi-platform environment.”

Kathryn's magazine was described as “excellent” by Craig Hooper, external examiner for her journalism course.

She gained paid work at BBC Radio Shropshire during her final year and is now employed as a broadcast assistant.

The previous winner of the Midlands Media Student of the Year award is University of Worcester graduate Conor Rees, for his magazine 99 Percent, which is now in production.
