READERS have come out in support of a monthly car meet in the city, after a councillor said he was worried it was putting students off studying at The Hive.

Councillor Richard Udall called on Worcester City Council to consider stopping the Anything Goes meets, which take place in the Cattle Market car park.

He said he had received complaints from students who were intimidated to study at The Hive library, during the events.

The councillor added that one nurse was threatened when she tried to speak with some of those at the meet about the extra pollution they were causing.

Police Constable Dave Wise, who works in Worcester, said: "On the two or three occasions I was asked to plan the police operation around this event I found it to be well behaved and law abiding - in terms of the actual use of the car park as a meeting place.

"It also seems to me the level of dodgy driving and anti-social behaviour isn't higher in that car park than on a busy Christmas shopping day."

Hannah Warwick, aged 25, who studied in Worcester and now runs Ultimate Wraps, added: "We’ve been a couple of times with our cars.

"We own a vinyl wrapping company so it’s good for us to be present, have a catch up with some of our customers and chat to others who are interested in what we do and have a look at the other cars around.

"Admittedly we go early and leave early but we’ve never seen anyone revving their engines, generally everyone is parked up with engines off and have paid the parking fee."

But some of our readers expressed frustration with the car meet and shared Cllr Udall's concerns.

Russ Thomas wrote on Facebook: "I live nowhere near the Hive so it has no impact on me - so my view is neutral.

"Why are the police at the event? Because the police are concerned. The best thing to do is hire them the police station car park.

"No cost because the cameras will keep a lookout."

The Anything Goes events started in 2015 and take place between 6pm and 9pm on the last Sunday of every month.
