PUPILS from Christopher Whitehead Language College have enjoyed a talk from an advertising expert.

Lawrence Caffrey, Global Strategist for PHD Media, visited the school to talk to year 11, 12 and 13 students at CWLC and Sixth Form.

The talk was part of the school's Impetus programme, to give students the chance to hear from professionals in industry and the academic world on topics that are relevant or interesting to them.

Mr Caffrey, 27, is an English Literature graduate from Bristol University and he spoke about how his love of reading and writing led him eventually into the world of advertising, working in a number of agencies before working at PHD, at their London offices.

The students learned how clear communication and a confidence in presenting are essential in advertising. Lawrence also spoke about the different branches of advertising and communication media that are available for graduates with a wide number of degree qualifications, not just English.

Students were given an idea of a day-in-the-life for the strategist which led to some interesting questions about routes into these careers and the switch from a love of English Literature to the excitement of the communications and ideas of advertising.

The visit took place on Wednesday, November 8.
