CONTRACTORS are currently working to repair some of the lights on the city’s biggest Christmas, after another vandalism attack.

The 36-foot high tree on the St John’s roundabout was switched on on Saturday November 23 before the lights were damaged by vandals two days later.

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “Some of the lights on it were vandalised and reported a couple of weeks ago.

“Then, yesterday (Thursday, December 7) morning we noticed some of the lights had gone out again.

“One of our officers went to visit, but did not believe it was vandalism,” he said.

However, he went on to say: “Our lighting contractors have since told us that the damage on the wiring appears to be deliberate.

“It definitely is vandalism,” he said. “It’s not blatant vandalism like before. More of a subtle way.”

The contractors are working on fixing the tree tonight and are hoping to get it up and running by Saturday, added the spokesman.

Following the initial vandal attack, Cllr Lucy Hodgson, chairman of the council’s place and economic development sub-committee, said: “It is very disappointing that mindless vandals have attacked the beautiful lighting on this tree.

"The Christmas lights bring joy to thousands of people across the city, but it seems someone out there wants to spoil it for everyone.

"I hope these people feel guilty about the public’s money having to be used to repair the result of their pathetic actions.”
