PERRY Wood Primary and Nursery School took part in the Royal Society's Young People's Book Prize for the second year.

The children attended a lunchtime club where they read and discussed the six short-listed books.

The judges considered the quality of the writing and layout, as well as how appealing and interesting each book is to its young readers.

The children's favourites included If... by David Smith, The Awesome Body Book by Adam Frost and the overall winner, Home Lab by Robert Winston.

After submitting their votes, the children enjoyed trying out some of the Home Lab experiments, including making slime and standing inside giant bubbles.

Headteacher Suzanne Beston said: "I am very proud of all of our young scientists, who have impressed me and their club leader with both their knowledge of and enthusiasm for science.

"We are delighted to continue our support of the Royal Society Book Prize scheme, which not only encourages children to read about science, but also celebrates the authors and illustrators who bring the subject to life."
