Work has started on possibly bringing Worcester City Football Club back home.

Although a planning application has not even been submitted to construct a new home for the club, which now plays at Bromsgrove, workmen have been active at the land in Warndon Villages at the north-eastern edge of the city that could become a new ground.

But Worcester City Council, which has proposed using the land off Parsonage Way for a new stadium has emphasised that this is very much preliminary investigative work,

A spokesman said of that the work which saw a series of small holes being dug: “Ground suitability investigations are being carried out at Parsonage Way. This is part of the work approved by the City Council’s Policy and Resources Committee in September to progress proposals for securing a new home for Worcester City Football Club.”

The work was expected to be completed in just one day.

In September last year the council agreed to spend £100,000 to see whether it would be feasible to construct a ground for the football club on the land, which is currently used by a farmer.

The report agreed by the authority said: "Funding would be used to support any technical work that is required and to contribute to the costs of preparatory work required to make the site viable. Early preparatory work will include support to prepare an initial design concept which can be used to inform public

consultation. An Environmental Impact Assessment will also be required, which will consider the impact on the cultivated land and the semi-natural areas in the vicinity of the site as well as consultation with relevant bodies."

Worcester City have been homeless since the club moved from St George’s lane in 2013. The land was sold to a housing developer and the sale was intended to fund a new ground at Nunnery Way, but that plan failed.

The club used the Aggborough ground of Kidderminster Harriers for three seasons and then moved to Bromsgrove Sporting’s ground at the start of last season.

A plan put forward by the Worcester City Supporters’ Trust to build a new multi-use sports ground at Perdiswell Sports Centre, was turned down by the city council’s planning committee – although the supporters’ trust has appealed against the decision.
