A Worcester man is asking for donations to help his three-year-old nephew who needs specialist equipment to combat a rare medical condition.

Connor Mitchell said nephew Ezra needed help after suffering from a rare condition called congenital hyperinsulinism since birth.

The condition puts Ezra at risk of having abnormally high levels of insulin, a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels, which can cause frequent episodes of low blood sugar, known as hypoglycaemia.

Ezra's family have set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than £1,000 in two days.

They hope to buy a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensor, which can be placed under the skin to continuously monitor glucose levels in the tissues.

The machine is expensive and there have been difficulty getting funds for Ezra, who lives in Stratford, from the NHS.

Mr Mitchell, of Dines Green, said: “It is like a form of diabetes, only it’s ten times worse.

“He has had to have blood sugar checks through having finger prick tests at least every three hours, although a lot of the time it is checked more than this.”

The new sensor will mean fewer finger pricks and quicker response times to hypoglycaemia.

It will also reduce the possibility of brain damage, which is a risk every time Ezra has a hypo.

Half the money will go towards setting up the system and costs to buy all the components.

The rest will be for the sensors, which are £51.25 each, with a short life span lasting around seven to ten days.

Even though the campaign has passed its original target, the family still hope for more donations to manage the machine's upkeep which is £200 a month.

Mr Mitchell said: “By using the new system, his nursery will find monitoring his blood sugar a lot safer too. "When he goes, special trained people have to inject him in his leg. It’s all about trust at the end of the day.

“My brother and sister in-law wouldn’t ask for your help if they didn’t think it was necessary.

"Please look at my nephew's GoFundMe page and feel free to share.

"Thank you, it would be much appreciated and every little penny counts.

“My goal is to raise awareness for this rare condition.”
