The daughter of Sir Nicholas Winton, who organised the rescue of Jewish children in peril in Czecholsvakia in 1939 will speak at a Holocaust memorial day event in Worcester on Saturday

Barbara Winton will speak at the Guildhall on Saturday at 1030am at the event organised by Worcestershire Interfaith Forum and hosted by the mayor of Worcester Steve Mackay.

Councillor Mackay said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a special day. One of remembrance of those who lost their lives and a time when we are reminded of the actions of those who brought about that loss. I am very pleased to be able to host this ceremony at the Worcester Guildhall this year and hope that many will attend on the morning.”

This year, the event is being supported as well by Worcester’s biggest landlord, Fortis Living, who are encouraging their staff and residents to join in this community event rather than holding one of their own.

The event, which starts at 10.30am on Saturday 27 January, is open to anyone who wishes to attend, and people may want to come and share the commemoration at the Guildhall, as a break in their Saturday morning shopping. There is no charge.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin joined MPs from up and down the country marking Holocaust Memorial Day ahead of Saturday. This week she signed the book of remembrance at the Houses of Parliament

She said: “The Holocaust Education Trust do remarkable work ensuring that today’s schoolchildren hear first-hand about the Holocaust.

“I have visited the camp myself with a group of local school children and have seen how affecting the trip can be. As the number of survivors declines, the Holocaust Education Trust ensures we never forget about this most horrific chapter in human history.”
