VOLUNTEERS champion mayor Steven Mackay has praised the work of groups across Worcester and believes the city would be a "poorer place" without them.

The Mayor told a group of 30 visitors from Worcester Citizens Advice Bureau and WHABAC he has been impressed by the scale of the work by volunteers in the city. He has chosen volunteering as the theme for his year and spoke to the group during a tour of the historic Guildhall.

"I have been encouraging people to volunteer because I have been so impressed by the amount of volunteering work done in the city," he said. "A large number of people carry out work in so many different organisations. I appreciate their value and I believe that the city would be a poorer place without them."

The Mayor has been backing Headway, Onside Advocacy and Victim Support during his year.

"Having people who are part of the community helping others in the community provides a sense of cohesion," he said.

He said he hoped more people, particularly young people would consider stepping forward to join voluntary groups.

The CAB/Whabac visitors included people from all areas of the organisation including advisers, supervisors, receptionists and law school students.

Advice Services Manager Geraint Thomas said the workload of the organisation had intensified and the problems had become ever more demanding and complex.

"Like all voluntary organisations, attracting volunteers is a constant challenge," he said. "Client numbers have increased and the problems have become more demanding and complex. The hard work of the volunteers is regularly reflected in the gratitude shown by our clients."

Colin Stuart, Volunteer Operations & Training Manager at Worcester CAB & WHABAC, said, “ We’re here to provide advice to anybody in the community who needs it, and we’re always happy to hear from people who are looking for volunteering opportunities, whether as advisers or in other roles such as administration, reception, or research and campaigns. We give full training and support, so you don’t need any special skills or qualifications. Find out more about volunteering with us by calling 01905 744564 or emailing advice@cabwhabac.org.uk.”
