STUDENTS and staff were invited to open up about mental health and celebrate uniqueness during a week of events at a Droitwich school.

Westacre Middle School, in Ombersley Way, held the inaugural Mental Health and Wellbeing Week as part of a drive to promote health and happiness across the school.

The school elected a team of pupil wellbeing ambassadors and used the hashtag #BeingOurselves!

Parents were invited to send in letters and photographs about what made them proud of their children.

Deputy headteacher Catherine Doolin was “delighted” with the parent participation and said everyone had “fun”.

She added: “We know that celebrating our individuality helps build positive self-esteem which in turn promotes good mental health.

“It was a pleasure to read and share all the lovely comments from our parents, from being a kind sibling, helping grandparents, being brave and trying something new, to being a good cyclist, musician, footballer and many more.”

Youngsters also wrote encouraging comments about themselves and their classmates on class figures, which are now displayed around the school as a reminder of their positive qualities.

All of the school's class teachers wrote a letter to their classes recognising individual strengths.

Other wellbeing activities also took place at the school, such as: smoothie making, relaxation strategies, mindfulness colouring and yoga.

The school regularly have yoga lessons and this week parents were invited to take part in these sessions alongside their child.

The week finished with an afternoon of music and collaborative playground games involving all the staff and children.
