A BOMB disposal unit detonated a suspected rifle grenade in the city today.

The explosive device was found next to Crookbarrow Way, in Worcester, at around 10.40am this morning.

An Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion at the site shortly before 1pm today.

Mike Hall, aged 29, from Kings Norton, Birmingham, spotted disposal experts and police officers at the scene at around 11.30am.

He said: "I didn't think anything like that [a rifle grenade] would be found in Worcester.

"I was driving a coach past and looked on my right side and noticed the blue lights and bomb disposal.

"The police and truck were right next to the road... right next to the building site."

Mr Hall witnessed the event while driving to Bromsgrove to pick up passengers for a trip to Cobham, in Surrey.

He said he last saw a bomb disposal team in 2017, when a 500lb World War Two bomb was found in Aston, Birmingham, near his home.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "Police were called to the A4440 Crookbarrow Way in Worcester at around 10.40am, following a report of what is thought to be a rifle grenade having been found.

"The device was safely removed."
