A YOUNG carer won the Good Carers and Friends Tryangle award in Worcestershire’s annual young people awards run by Worcestershire youth charity, Young Solutions.

Logan Ware, 17 of Blackpole, Worcester said it means a lot to him.

“It motivates you to keep going when you see other people who appreciate what you’re doing.”

Logan is a carer for his mum Julie Ware, who suffers with Osteoporosis of the spine and Osteoarthritis in her knees.

Mrs Ware, 47 said:

“He’s been through a lot in his life, including losing his dad to cancer last year. He truly deserved that award because of everything he does for me and for the family. If it wasn’t for him doing things for me all the time like going to the shops and things like that, then I would be very stuck.”

She added: “He’s a very special child.”

Mr Ware said being a carer is “very difficult.”

“Obviously I want to help my mum, she’s my mum, but it is still very hard. She needs help with day to day things that most people would find easy. It’s difficult to find time for yourself because someone else needs you so much. You have to find a balance, but I’ve found a balance.”

He says School was the hardest time for him.

“I had a lot of time off because I felt like didn’t want to leave mum and felt like I should be with her, especially when my step dad was ill. That was very hard, but I had a lot of help from Sarah from Action For Children who was brilliant. She was always there for me to talk to.”

Logan also volunteers with Action for children and visits young trans people, he says that there is not much support for trans people in Worcester.

“It’s just being there for them and listening to them and helping them through everything they’re going through, so they have someone to talk to. It’s very rewarding, its always nice to see how much it makes them feel better.”

His advice for other young carers is: “Don’t forget about yourself, because your important too. You need to remember to give time to yourself because if you don’t look after yourself you definitely can’t look after another person.”

Logan says he would one day like to work in a zoo but will always want to help trans people in the community. “It will always be part of my life, I don’t ever want to leave them behind.”
