A TEACHER will take part in in the London Marathon to support ‘Children with Cancer’.

Matt Nicholls, 42, from Worcester, who teaches at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in the city says: “Children are the last people you’d want to be affected by cancer.”

His mother, Cathy had bowel cancer, she has yearly check-ups but is well.

Mr Nicholls’ two uncles have also been affected by cancer.

His uncle Roger has a type of blood cancer but is doing well, his uncle Richard has prostate cancer which has now spread into his back. Mr Nicholls says he is very ill and it is “devastating”.

He said: “My uncle Rich is frequently in hospital and has undergone chemo.”

Mr Nicholls, who has been training for around 16 weeks, has two small children.

He said: “The main point of it is to raise as much money for children with cancer as possible. As a teacher it’s quite relevant to me.

“Training is second to that really.

“Training has gone well but its primarily about raising money for a good cause.”

Mr Nicholls has completed the Manchester marathon, and ran 1,000 kilometres for Macmillan, but he has never done the London marathon before.

He said: “I’m nervous and excited about the race. I know it sounds like I should be a PE teacher, but I actually teach IT, I’m a real geek.”

Mr Nicholls will compete in the London Marathon on April 22. For more information and to support him, go to his support page uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MattNicholls
