STUDENTS at a Martley school performed a Easter rap song written by a 69-year-old radio DJ.

Eve Robertson, who lives in Knightwick, Malvern, who hosts a Sunday morning Christian praise show at her online community station, Longside Radio, said she was thinking about Easter when the idea of writing a rap about the resurrection of Jesus came to her.

The song, which she describes as 'modern' and 'upbeat' was performed and recorded by students at Martley CE Primary School, who rapped the track at their Easter service at St Peter’s Church in Martley on Thursday.

Speaking on the performance, she said: "I did enjoy it. They came down each side of the aisle. It was almost like a performance -they (the students) really made it come alive. It would be really wonderful if someone could make it into a record. Those are the thing you dream about.

"The kids, they were practising it on the playground. They put their heart and soul into it."

Andrew Massey, headteacher at Martley CE Primary School, said: "The oldest children in Oak class were inspired by local radio presenter and poet Eve Robertson to perform her version of the Easter story.

"It was a perfect opportunity to blend the traditional with the new, performing rap in the historic St Peter`s Church in Martley, retelling the Easter story with vigour and attitude.

"Another great example of the different aspects of the village community of Martley coming together, uniting through the story of Jesus's resurrection.

"Thanks to Eve, the team at St Peters and all of the children, families, governors and staff to end the term with great style."

Ms Robertson plays a range of music on her show, from Christian songs to mainstream hits. She also takes requests.

Ms Robertson, who is originally from Hong Kong, has worked as a DJ for Longside Radio, a non-profit community station in Martley, for around six months.

She said she has always written songs, but this is her first rap track. She has also penned a musical about her mother’s life in Hong Kong, a book and a children’s story.

Previously she played Praise You by Fat Boy Slim on her show.
