A PARADE led by a couple dressed as St George and the dragon marched through a city park.

St George’s Day was celebrated in Gheluvelt Park on Sunday involving events such as games, storytelling, duck racing, candy floss, first aid classes, a bouncy castle and music from the Worcester Ukulele Club and the Fidgets.

A sea of English flags were on show in the park as the patron saint of the country was celebrated.

Paul Harding, owner of Discover History, and his fiancée, Helen Lee, dressed up as St George and the Dragon.

Mr Harding said: “St George is often forgotten about but St Patrick’s and St David’s are celebrated by lots of people who aren’t from those countries and I think he should be more celebrated like that.

“I think the parade went really well, it was looking a bit quiet until just before the parade when a lot of people came out of the woodwork.

“The celebration here has got a lot more popular. I think this and the scout parade are the only two celebrations of St George.

“St George was a great warrior hero and Gheluvelt Park was created by the city council after the First World War to remember all the heroes of the war and of the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914.”

The Friends of Gheluvelt Park organised the bonanza alongside Discover History.

The parade started at the main gate of the park before proceeding to the main part of the park.
