HUNDREDS of people gathered in Worcester to celebrate St George’s Day with a scout parade through the heart of the city.

Several scout groups marched from Angel Place to Worcester Cathedral via Broad Street and High Street on Sunday before a cathedral service took place ahead of St George’s Day on Monday.

The 8th Worcester Scout Group led the parade and organised the service, with the help of Reverend Jo Musson, the Vicar of Claines.

The 5th Worcester Scouts rhythmic drumming caused shoppers to take notice and the 1st Malvern Company Boys Brigade band performed for watching crowds.

Scouts, beavers, cubs, explorers and network scouts aged from six all the way to adults along with group leaders gathered in Angel Place before the parade.

Lucy Barkas, scout leader of 5th Worcester said: “Our scouts enjoy marching for good causes. It is something for them to be proud of.

“It teaches them important disciplines and they have a lot of fun with it.

“We always have a lot of support from the public on St George’s Day and it has grown bigger. We are very thankful for the support we are given.”

Chloe Field of 1st Worcester Scouts and Network Scouts added: “It is important for us to celebrate St George as the patron saint of England.”

After the service the parade reformed on College Green and marched via the High Street to the Guildhall, where the salute was taken.

Scouts were also invested at the parade, to mark them becoming full members.

St George’s Day is celebrated by scouts every year, as St George was chosen to be the patron saint of scouting because of how he overcame adversity by taking down a dragon.
