A CROSSING that was set to be axed over a year ago is still there today.

The crossing on Croft Road, opposite The Hive and dubbed 'Worcester's most hated,' was set to be removed last year following heavy criticism from the public.

The public, as well as the University, criticised the crossing, which was put in place to provide a link to the Hive when it opened in 2012.

Frustrated drivers described it as ‘an accident waiting to happen.’

While some complained about the unnecessary traffic caused by a constant stream of people crossing the road.

Last year, Councillor Simon Geraghty said that he wanted the crossing to be removed and replaced with a pelican crossing, using funds from the council’s £5 million pound ‘fighting fund,' set aside for projects to ease congestion in the city.

Last April, he said: “It will now be reviewed as part of that fund with the aim of putting in a pelican crossing instead.

“It’s such a popular crossing with people who go into town, but you get drips and drabs walking across, which becomes problematic.”

In October, it was confirmed by Worcestershire County Council that the zebra crossing would be replaced with a pelican crossing using traffic lights.

It was part of a bigger plan to improve traffic across the city - thanks to a £3.2million investment from the Department for Transport.

However, to date, the crossing remains unchanged.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “We appreciate residents’ concerns regarding the zebra crossing on Croft Road which is located on a particularly busy stretch of road in Worcester city centre.

"We are in negotiations with a number of partners to find the best solution for all involved.”
