A SWAN with a broken wing was rescued by firefighters from the canal in Worcester.

Firefighters were called by Wychbold Swan Rescue (WSR) to help rescue the swan near bridge 17, near Perdiswell, of the Worcester to Birmingham canal on Tuesday evening.

People on a canal boat using that section of the canal spotted the swan with a broken wing and alerted them, but on arrival they realised they would need the help of firefighters to rescue the swan.

A crew from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service arrived around 7pm, and two boats were needed to get the swan out from the water.

Jan Harrigan, who runs WSR, said: "Blue watch attended. They were absolutely brilliant, they always are.

"We really could not do these rescues without them.

"The swan has gone to the vets now - his wing may need amputating.

"He was distressed - they never know we are helping them.

"This time of year males are fighting, so it may be he was injured when the swans were scrapping with each other."
