AN accounting firm has taken out a new kind of share by sponsoring a scheme which helps the over 50s meet up and build community projects.

Droitwich-based Ormerod Rutter, has sponsored Age UK’s ‘Men in Sheds’ projects which supports socially isolated men and gives them a friendly and supportive workshop space – including tools, machinery and materials – to learn new skills and develop existing ones.

Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch & Wyre Forest is appealing for businesses, groups and individuals to sponsor a shed for £100 a year so that it can continue to run its ‘Men in Sheds’ group.

Robin Williams, marketing manager at Ormerod Rutter, said: “The scheme’s aimed at supporting older men to get together, share and learn new skills – all in the welcoming space of a shed.

“As we’re a local business with strong local connections, we’re always keen to support the local community and when we heard about Bromsgrove’s Men in Sheds group, we immediately knew we wanted to help keep it going.”

Local businesses, groups and individuals can sponsor a Shed Share for £100 a year.

Jo Hughes, marketing executive from Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch & Wyre Forest, said: “We’re really grateful for Ormerod Rutter’s support, as every penny helps make sure we can continue to run this much-valued group.

“Members are provided with a supportive and friendly setting where they can socialise and learn new skills.

“They make a whole host of things, ranging from wooden bird boxes and planters, to bug houses and bee hotels, in addition to undertaking their own projects.”

Jim Collis, who is a member of the group, said: “There’s no pressure, people can just come and have a chat and a cuppa if that’s all they’re looking for.

“Our ‘shedders’ come from a variety of backgrounds, but we all work together and there’s a role for everyone.”

Members of the Bromsgrove Men in Sheds group meet from 10am until 2pm, Mondays to Thursdays at Unit 1, Metal Ores Industrial Estate, 138 Hanbury Road, Stoke Prior.
