EVENTS at a city park were saved after a plea for sponsors was answered by a generous local developer.

Matthews Construction, based in Worcester, handed over £1,000 to the group to help put on free events throughout the year.

Amanda Hancock, secretary of the Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery, said:

“At the beginning of 2018 we were skint.

“We had spent all our funds on providing free family entertainment and special projects in the park last year.

“There was a real danger that we wouldn't be able to carry on this year so we put out an appeal for sponsorship and donations.”

Rob Matthews of Matthews Construction, said: “We are a local developer active in the area and were more than happy to support this local event.

“Especially as the event organisers are all volunteers who are trying to boost community spirit by bringing families together enabling them to enjoy our public open spaces.

“The real praise and thanks should go to all the volunteers who gave up their time to make this event and others like this happen.

“We look forward to the next event on August Bank Holiday Monday.”

Lynn Denham, chairman of the Friends group, was very grateful to the Matthews brother.

“We have now started planning for a One World in Our Park Festival on August Bank Holiday Monday, knowing that we can afford the marquee and some loos.

“We can also announce that the festival will begin at 5pm and that Voices Unlimited choir are booked to perform.”
