A POLICE drugs raid on a house in Droitwich resulted in a man appearing in court, even though just £3 worth of cannabis was found, due to his previous convictions.

Simon Byrne, of Woodmans Way, admitted possession of cannabis after police smashed his front door down.

Officers from the Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood team, assisted by the force tasking team, raided the house last November after issuing a drugs warrant.

The 33-year-old had a small bag of cannabis which he had bought for £10.

Colette Orton, prosecuting, said that since Byrne had already used a large proportion of the drugs, the street value could be as low as £3.

The drugs were for Byrne’s own personal use, she added.

Joanna Outhwaite, defending, said: “I was surprised that police took this to court rather than just giving a caution but I think this is because of his history of offending.

“It was a small bag of cannabis he bought for £10 but he had already used a lot of it.

“He issued a timely guilty plea and was co-operative with the police.”

Byrne was given a conditional discharge and told to pay costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £20.

The forfeiture and destruction of the drugs was also ordered by the magistrates.

Byrne admitted possession of cannabis, a class B drug.

Officers swooped on the house at 7.30am on Friday November 24, as part of three raids in 10 days in Droitwich as police looked to crack down on drugs.

Byrne was previously in court in July 2016 for inscribing “Simon Byrne 2016” into his cell when he was arrested for an offence he was later cleared of.

Byrne appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday May 17.
