VISITORS to Worcester’s Commandery have the chance to experience the very first public performance of Civil War Stories this Sunday (May 27).

A spokesman said: “The original play weaves true tales of politics, religion, monarchy and conflict, including a bloody battle that took place in the heart of Worcester, and it will delight adults and children alike.

“Civil War Stories stars Charles I, Charles II, Oliver Cromwell and other real-life characters including Prince Rupert of Bohemia, a monkey and a poodle, as well as the one boy from Worcester who witnessed it all and lived to tell the tale.”

The spokesman added: “Featuring local actors Jonathan Darby and Claire Worboys, the eccentric characters and horrible history will appeal to children and adults alike. The audience will learn how a significant battle sparked the beginning of a new way of ruling: one governed by the parliament acting on the wishes of the people, supported by monarchy.”

Creative Director of Civil War Stories, Ruth Richardson said: “As a child I learned about Charles I, Charles II and Oliver Cromwell. “Now I have been be lucky enough to work with heritage experts and professional actors to create a play to be performed in the significant setting of The Commandery.”

The performance takes place at 3pm on Sunday May 27, as part of the Oak Apple Day Celebrations.
