A DRINK driver who drove the wrong way along Droitwich High Street was sentenced at court.

Elliott Hall-Annison had 108 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when he was stopped by police officers in Tagwell Road, Droitwich. The limit is 35mg.

Hall-Annison, a 23-year-old pub worker was described as driving erratically by going over the white lines and travelling over the 30 miles per hour speed limit as well as going the wrong way down the one-way High Street.

Colette Orton, prosecuting, said it was "unacceptable standards of driving."

However, James Mason, defending, said: “Saying that he was over the driving limit is no help to you, no help to us and no help to the CPS.

"It does not say if he was going at 31 miles per hour or 55 miles per hour. It makes a big difference.

“He has realised he had a drinking problem and has taken steps to rectify that. He has quit his job at a pub and joined an estate agent.

“His battle with alcohol problems made him think that it was almost inevitable that something like this would happen.

“He was not familiar with the road so he did not know the High Street was one-way.”

Mr Mason added that nobody was injured in the crash and no damage was caused, which he claimed meant it did not fall into a high level of unacceptable standards of driving.

A reference from Connells Estate Agents was handed to magistrates, which praised Hall-Annison's character but said he would lose his job.

Hall-Annison, of Falcon Close, Droitwich, was given a 26 month driving ban, a community order with 140 unpaid work hours and 20 rehabilitation activity days.

He must also pay costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £85. He appeared in court on Thursday May 17.
