TWENTY-six years ago today, more than 600 vehicles belonging to New Age travellers pulled up on Castlemorton Common - the start of the infamous "free festival"'

The next day, the normally tranquil Malvern Hills were thrust onto TV screens and front pages across the UK and beyond.

As the wekend went on, up to 40,000 travellers and ravers gathered on the common for a party that for some lasted the best part of a week.

Public outrage led to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which sought to outlaw similar events in future.
