THERE has been a mixed reaction to designs for a new £3million mosque in the city.

Many people have praised the plans as bold and impressive, although some are not fond of the gold-coloured tiles, which look similar to those used on the Hive library.

Some readers have also argued that the money could be put towards better uses, such as building hospitals or schools.

Mike Parkin, who lives in Worcester, said: "It looks amazing.

"Worcester needs brave and modern public architecture to compliment the surviving historic buildings and to make up for the bland identikit private housing estates that are spoiling the periphery of the city and every bit of spare land within it."

Michael Pincott added: "Great news if those involved can raise the capital to get it done properly.

"The area is overdue for rejuvenation down that road. It would be great if Worcester had more community led projects of the same scale."

Dan Turner said: "Church or mosque or whatever religious building, £3million is a complete waste of money.

"There are so many more important things to invest in. A pretty building for religion is a luxury.

"You can pray in a field, in your house or at work for free. Invest in what brings back a return or brings benefit to all for that much money."

Other readers raised concerns that the mosque, which is expected to have enough prayer space for around 1,300 worshippers, will put pressure on parking in the area.

The mosque will be built as part of a wider development, which will include the construction of four apartments and a new sports centre at Unity House.

The overall project is expected to cost £5million and the Worcester Muslim Welfare Association hopes to submit a planning application in July.

The association will raise the money for the mosque over the next three to five years.
