So the media furore is over…again.

They seem to come and go don’t they; like a flash in the pan.

And probably that is what they are. So we’ve had another one at the hospital. Shock! Horror!

The powers that be have appointed Sir David Nicholson as our new chairman. I won’t tell you what the headlines said; you can read that for yourself.

Suffice to say it was not flattering.

But it is still a fact that David was chief executive of NHS England. That sounds to me like a lot of skill and experience to bring to the Worcestershire Acute Trust.

Someone who has been at the top table; who knows how the NHS works and should work; and who has the passion and the drive to make it happen.

Now, of course, as chief executive of NHS England, his tenure was not without controversy; and fell at the time of one of the most shameful episodes of the NHS, namely the Mid-Staffordshire scandal.

The newspapers will tell you with certainty that the top team were to blame; but for me it is tragedy enough without the scapegoating. I write all this after David popped into my office on the morning of his first day and we chatted about the state of the hospital.

He is wise enough to know to ask chaplains about what’s really going on. And so I told him in as full and as frank way as I know how; but with optimism and hope that things are already improving and can do so even more.

Don’t forget that the headlines, whilst lurid, won’t tell you about the work of the charitable foundation he is committed to in providing healthcare to the developing world; his passion for universal healthcare and his drive and tenacity.

And no doubt, some of you reading this will do what many have done and Google it all. But if you do, then treat what you read with caution.

For me, I stand by my Tweet after meeting him: “Amazing to see David Nicholson so visible around the trust on his first week as chair.

"Here’s an idea. How about judging someone by the job that they do rather than on what the tabloids say they might allegedly have done #JustSaying.”
