ENGLAND fans were out in force to watch the 2018 World Cup opener, filling the city’s bars and pubs, then spilling onto the streets.

Following the game, crowds took to the streets to celebrate Harry Kane’s injury time winner against Tunisia – chanting and banging on cars as they drove past.

Emily Louise Clarke, who had just finished work at the Whitehouse Hotel on Foregate Street, filmed footage of fans gathered on The Cross as police vans arrived.

She said it was “an amazing atmosphere to see everyone coming together supporting our country.”

However, the 17-year-old, from Worcester, did say one person was taken away in a police van while many were “banging on cars and vans that were going past.”

“I wasn’t expecting to come out from work and see the streets covered,” she added.

Harry Kane kept his head to nod home a 91st-minute winner during a tense finish to England’s opening World Cup group match – sending fans into raptures - on Monday evening.

Popular sports bar Mode, on Angel Place, Worcester, was packed with supporters dancing to The Lightning Seeds’ Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home), which came on after the final whistle.

One 28-year-old fan, who watched the game at Mode, said: “In hindsight, it was probably a bit premature to be celebrating so hard after only the opening game, but I think it was more the fact that the goal came so late.

“The game was a bit up and down and you could feel the tension building in Mode as it got towards the final whistle.”

He went on to say: “The atmosphere in the city centre afterwards was great to see, plenty of chanting and good spirits.

“As England fans, we don’t get much to celebrate, usually, and I can’t remember the last time we won our opening game or bagged a last-minute winner,” he added.

However, a concerned resident said he had seen footage of "bad" trouble which occurred in the city centre after the match. West Mercia Police was unable to confirm if its officers made any arrests.
