I THINK England fans need to retain a sense of perspective after Monday night’s win over Tunisia.

England snatched a last minute winner when Harry Kane headed home from a corner.

After my colleague’s upbeat belief that England could win the whole tournament and the wild celebrations on Monday like it was already in the bag it is important to remember that this was only one match.

Also, Tunisia looked solid and organised but they do not have the strength of other teams in the competition.

People will point out to major nations failing to beat sides of similar quality or even slightly worse which means that this is a very good result.

I agree with this, but keep my reservations. It would not be the first time England had built up everyone’s expectations just to come crashing back down to earth again.

It was great to see people spilling into the streets to celebrate England winning and the fans at Mode, where I chose to watch the match, belting out Three Lions at the final whistle.

But I cannot help but think this may have come a bit early. I am going to avoid getting excited until at least the quarter finals.

Certainly if we are to progress far into the competition, England must finish off more of their chances. They should have scored many more than the two they actually put it in the net.

It is amazing how much one moment changes what everyone thinks about the performance.

I am pretty sure there were many fans waiting to berate the players at fulltime before Kane’s late winner.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system caused chaos again and I question whether it will ever be successful long-term.

I believe that the penalty given to Tunisia was soft and that England should definitely have had one themselves. Yet VAR failed to overturn either decision.

This is exactly the moments that it is there for and it is concerning to see it not working as it should do.

Former England defender Gary Neville blasted the system, saying: “VAR going wrong isn’t down to VAR officials. There are 2 of them in there wading through 26 angles and having to make a call in maybe 20 seconds.”

I think I agree with Neville and to throw it into a major tournament without more trials is an accident waiting to happen.
