A DRIVER was taken to hospital yesterday morning after crashing into a barrier near Worcester Recycling Centre – just days after residents had said they feared a collision could happen due to traffic near the tip.

Bilford Road was closed at the junction with Wordsworth Avenue until 10.20am, after the single-car crash at around 9am.

Police, firefighters and an air ambulance were called to the scene and the woman was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with injured which were not believed to be serious.

On Saturday the Worcester News reported that residents were concerned about the dangerous traffic situation near Bilford Road tip, with one woman describing the scene at weekends as "bedlam".

Sally Layton, of Bilford Road, said: “It is just ridiculous. We often come from a different direction so that we avoid the queues and there have been so many accidents, partly because the road is not wide enough. People going to Saturday football matches also park on both sides of the road and it causes bedlam.”

She added that the situation had been worsened after a traffic island was installed in the middle of the road, making the route even narrower.

Malcolm Smith, of Portefields Road, said he feared someone could be killed. "This is an accident waiting to happen," he told the Worcester News.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “At peak times the site on Bilford Road, as with Household Recycling Centres across the country, can experience high volumes. We ask that drivers remain patient and safe during this these times.”
