A BAN on single use plastic, a weekend skip service and an extended leisure centre bus run will all be discussed at tonight's full city council meeting.

Councillor Neil Laurenson, who represents St Stephen's, is putting forward the motion to make Worcester City Council 'single use plastic free' by the end of October this year. If accepted, the council would phase out bottles, cups, cutlery and straws and champion reusable alternatives.

The city council would also encourage visitors, local businesses and other local public agencies to do the same.

Meanwhile, a Saturday skip service for residents in Gorse Hill will be suggested by the recently-elected Councillor Mohammad Altaf.

He says the community in Gorse Hill is one of the most economically deprived in the city but does not have regular access to the skip service like Warndon and Ronkswood does.

Councillor Altaf hopes to introduce a fortnightly service - which will allow residents without a car to throw away large household waste - as quickly as possible.

Councillor Lynn Denham, who represents Cathedral ward, is calling on the council to open discussions with LMS Travel to extend its 39 bus service to allow more residents to use Perdiswell Leisure Centre

The bus company, which operates the service from Crowngate Bus Station, via Blackpole and Lower Wick, ends at 6pm on weekdays and does not run on a Sunday.

The city council is also expected to approve £1.7m for the demolition of the swimming pool and leisure centre in Sansome Walk.

Worcestershire County Council will also meet in full on Thursday (July 19).

The county council will hear motions regarding the county's preparations for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, school crossing attendant's pay and the Edward Elgar archives.
