DROITWICH musician, Patrick Healy is in the mood to celebrate after becoming the British melodeon champion for the fifth time.

Patrick, who was born in Ireland, took part in the recent Irish music championships for the UK on June 24, and he also managed to come second for the mouth organ.

Mr Healy said: “This means I have qualified for the all-Ireland competition on two instruments this will be held in August where I will compete against the rest of the world in the final.”

The competition in Stirling was hosted by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the largest worldwide organisation “devoted to the promotion and preservation of Irish traditional music, song, dance and language”.

Competitors must play at least four tunes from various categories including a march, a jig and a barn dance.

Now Mr Healy, who also plays the concertina, is looking forward to next month and the world championships in Drogheda.

Mr Healy moved to Droitwich as a youngster, in the 1960s.
