RESIDENTS have hit out at plans to build a house on land in Cherry Close, Droitwich.

Householders in the street, alongside neighbouring residents in Cockshute Hill, are campaigning to save the ‘green space’ at the end of the cul-de-sac, after developers submitted plans to build on the site in May.

The proposed development would include one home, one car parking space and two bicycle spaces.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Tony Jones said: “The residents of Cherry Close and their neighbours in Cockshute Hill, Droitwich, are furious.

“This land has always been considered to be green space. Now a planning application has been submitted to build a two-storey dwelling on a small green space at the end of the cul-de-sac.

“Cherry Close is a mature area; any building on this piece of land would irrevocably change the character of the Close. In light of the major housing developments currently in progress not three quarters of a mile away, there can be no pressing need for one more house to be built here.

“Building here would mean the felling of several mature trees, three of which are Swedish Whitebeams that were planted to replace the original elm tree which succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease.

“The purchasers of this land also propose to build a similar house on the grassy bank at the junction of Cockshute Hill with Tagwell Road, with vehicular access onto Primsland Drive dangerously close to its junction with Cockshute Hill.

“This area forms a green gateway to the whole Cherry Hill estate.

“Building on this land would not only adversely affect the immediate area but would be to the detriment of the whole estate."

Project architect Devan Mistry said: "Some trees will be removed as part of this proposed development but we have proposed to plant more trees on the other green areas next to this on Cherry Close itself and enhance the environment for everyone through the planting of flowerbeds etc. We do not deem the loss of the portion of open green space at Cherry Close as excessive given that there are five or six other green spaces within a two to eight min walk from this location."

A consultation on the plans is due to end on Thursday and residents have until then to comment on the application. To make a comment, search 18/00966/FUL on plan.wychavon.gov.uk.
