VOLUNTEERS from a Worcestershire nursery brought their green fingers to three Malvern care homes this time last year.

Staff from David’s Nurseries, at Martin Hussingtree, near Worcester spent a day planting bulbs in the grounds of the Davenham, Bradbury Court and Perrins House care homes, which share a site off Graham Road. The bulbs included dahlias, lilies and begonias, and as well as planting them, the team presented a cheque for £200.92 to Friends of the Elderly, which runs the homes. The money was raised through various activities at the nursery, including greeting customers in costume during a fundraising superhero weekend.

Eddie Reid, manager of the nursery, told the Worcester News last year:

“We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with Friends of the Elderly. They are a great charity that does great work which is obviously close to the hearts of many of our customers. It’s great to be able to connect generations together, and events like this help make that possible. Planting bulbs is always an investment into the future and we look forward to seeing them bring joy to the residents in the years to come.”

James Wadlow, general manager of Davenham, Bradbury Court and Perrins House, when interviewed last year, said: “They will make a great addition in our sensory garden. We’d like to thank everyone at David’s Nurseries for their support.”

Sophie Roberts, aged 20, a David’s Nurseries sales assistant and one of the bulb-planting team, said: “Gardening is a fantastic common link and interest across the generations.

“Time is precious; it’s good to spend time with older people, enjoying things together like gardening, which is such a nice gentle pastime that you can take at your own pace.."
