A WORCESTER News reader has sent in these pictures of the mess left behind by travellers in the Brickfield area of the city.

Following legal action by Worcester City Council, the caravans pitched on King George V Playing Fields, off Ash Avenue, Brickfields, left the site on Friday.

The travellers had moved onto the site on Wednesday July 4, with 10 caravans setting up camp there.

The following Monday, Worcester City Council served the travellers with a notice to leave immediately, with support from West Mercia Police.

One of the travellers, who identified herself only as Marie, told this newspaper: “We always leave the place as we found it.”

But the reader who took these pictures said: “The council have let the people of Brickfields down again. It’s disgusting.

“It appears they got in while the bollard was down to let a disabled driver through and then stole the bollard to allow access to the others.

“I also witnessed a group of drunk teenagers from the camp threatening a local teenager over his mountain bike and I’m under no illusion that if I hadn’t stepped in they would have taken it from him.”

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said yesterday afternoon (Monday): “Our contractors Place Partnership are on the site right now clearing up, and they are expecting to finish by the end of the day.”

He said that Place Partnership were also on site as soon as the last vehicle left to make sure the barrier was secure again.

On the Worcester News facebook page, Will Son said: “This is like Groundhog Day. They always stay as long as they want.

“So, instead of wasting money on police and court orders that are completely ignored, use the money to pay for a skip.

“ Put it on the site and it will make the clear up afterwards a lot cheaper. Taxpayers will be better off.”

Andrew Holmes said: “I don’t mind travellers as long as they keep off private land and don’t act anti-socially.

“If all they left was bags of rubbish then so be it. How many people do we have living in paid for houses by society that have their bins emptied for free?”

Cheryl Thomasson said: “It’s disgusting over there and plenty of the community complained. You just didn’t listen.”
