A WOMAN is holding a fundraiser in memory of her mum who died in a tragic accident, and for her brother who died in 2016.

Jo Durnford decided to hold the fundraiser this year as 2018 marks 30 years since her mum, Sue, died when she was 36-years-old in a scuba diving accident in Pembroke.

Miss Durnford was aged just 11-years-old when the tragedy happened.

The Tibberton resident said: "Having suffered such a traumatic event at such a young age both my brother and myself struggled for many years to come to terms with what had happened.

"I have received many years of intense trauma therapy which I am still receiving today and I am due to finish in September.

"My brother did not seek help and sadly decided to end his journey two years ago, which led to more trauma for me.

"This year marks the 30th anniversary and I finally feel strong enough to give something back to those brave people who went to mum's rescue.

"I am holding a family fun day at the Worcester Early Years Centre on Sunday, August 5.

"The event will end with myself and my nine-year-old daughter, Emmie, releasing two white doves after a personal reading - the doves are to represent them."

The 41-year-old is raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and in particular the teams from two stations - David’s Lifeboat and Little & Broadhaven in Pembrokeshire.

RNLI's volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, while seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches.

The RNLI also has a flood rescue team helping those affected by serious flooding events, and offers international support during emergencies.

The fun day is set to take place between noon and 4pm at Worcester Early Years Centre in Manor Farm, Malvern Road.

The event is set to feature face painting, as Miss Durnford is a local face painter who goes under her name Artistic Tinker, as well as sand art, unicorn pony rides, arts and crafts, a bouncy castles, entertainment, a princess and superman visit, emergency services visit and a raffle.

Miss Durnford originally aimed to raise £1,000 but has already managed to get to £4,540.

"I would like to thank people for their love and support," Miss Durnford said.

"It is just amazing to see the amount of support.

"I hope to see you all on the day."

Miss Durnford added that at the end of August she was going to meet the lifeboat crews from both stations, where a few of the original crew who went to save her mum will also be in attendance.
