NEW designs have been unveiled for a housing project which could be built on top of the city's closed swimming pool.

YMCA Worcestershire and Sanctuary Housing hope to turn Sansome Walk swimming pool into 76 flats and 22 shared ownership homes.

Residents were offered a glimpse at the latest drawings for the development during a consultation event at St George's Church, in Sansome Place, Worcester, yesterday.

Some locals previously raised concerns about the 'density' of the proposed multi-storey blocks that would house the YMCA flats.

Alan Moorhouse, head of adults and communities at YMCA Worcestershire, said: "The flats will be for under 35s in training or employment.

"This is the start of the consultation. We will do future events if we need to.

"Today has been good, there's been a good level of discussion and debate and a good number of people through the door."

Charity workers previously raised concerns about the future of the residents at the current YMCA site in Henwick Road, which will close in December 2019.

Mr Moorhouse confirmed that roughly 40 people living at the centre used to be homeless, however he has pledged that they will be moved into other accommodation over the next 18 months.

He added that the YMCA is in discussions with the city and county councils about providing alternative temporary accommodation for homeless people.

The new YMCA flats will provide affordable accommodation for single people, with rent levels expected to be around £90 to £100 a week.

City councillor Joy Squires, who represents the Arboretum, said: "As far as I know this is the only consultation planned but if local residents feel that this isn't enough I can ask Sanctuary and the YMCA to consider putting on future events."

A spokesman for Sanctuary Group said: "It has been interesting to hear people’s views on the proposals at this first consultation event and we are grateful to everyone who has taken the time to attend.

"The feedback we have received will be reviewed and discussed in detail and further consultation will take place as part of the planning process."

An enterprise hub, providing work space for self-employed people, would also be built at the site if the project gets the go-ahead.

Worcester City Council signed off on selling the swimming pool to Sanctuary Housing and the YMCA in March, following months of secret talks.

The sale has not yet been completed as there is still legal work to be done.

The demolition of Sansome Walk swimming pool is due to start in early autumn.
