A VILLAGE show is improving every year, according to attendees this weekend.

Hundreds of people went to the Martley Horticultural Show and Fete, on Martley Playing Field, near Worcester, on Saturday.

Visitors enjoyed music, food and even a go at welly wanging.

Experienced welly thrower Nick Lambourne, aged 49, said: "My first throw was 27 metres.

"It's a bit of fun. It's really good. I did it a couple of years ago.

"Waiting for the wind is the secret."

Mr Lambourne said he had attended Martley village shows for the last 15 years and compared them to the annual fete in Alfrick.

The lorry mechanic, from Knightwick, credited the events with bringing local communities together.

Jean Macauley, aged 71, who was supporting a Scout's band at the show, said: "It's very good this year.

"There's a lot more this year, there are more stalls. I think the event is growing, it's getting known."

Ms Macauley added that she was glad the weather held out as it had rained at previous shows.

Phillipa Gilfillan, founder of the sustainable shopping business Pack It In Zero Waste Living, said the show was a great way to promote her company - as it drew in a different demographic.

Ms Gilfillan, who had a stall on the playing field, said: "Events like this are good for publicity, I've met lots of people who aren't on Facebook."
