A POLICE chief has reassured counter demonstrators that they will still be able to see English Defence League (EDL) protesters this weekend.

Opponents of the far-right group previously criticised the police for denying them permission to hold a protest in Cornmarket, Worcester, on Saturday.

Instead, police bosses have allowed them to stage a rally in Silver Street car park, although activists say this is outside the city centre.

The EDL will march from Angel Place to Cornmarket car park on Saturday afternoon, in opposition to plans to build a £3million mosque in Stanley Road, Worcester.

Chief Superintendent Mark Travis, of West Mercia Police, said: “Significant plans have been put in place to ensure that the groups meeting at their designated muster points are able to walk to their final assembly point in the city safely.

“The plans in place will ensure each group is able to undertake peaceful protest at their agreed locations within the city centre.

“The EDL will assemble in the Cornmarket and the counter demonstrators will be located in Silver Street car park.

"The groups will not come together but will be able to vocally protest in close proximity of each other.

"We have worked with the representatives from both groups and this policing plan is in response to these requests.

“We are seeking to ensure disruptions to businesses and visitors is minimised on the day.”

Robin Walker, the MP for Worcester, described the EDL's politics as divisive.

He added that the group is in decline and said far-right organisations have failed to achieve success in elections.
