NEW speed bumps in a residential road are attracting the ire of drivers and local people.

The traffic-calming measures were put in place in Malvern Link two weeks ago - but have provoked complaints.

Taxi driver Sue Penny, who has many customers in the area, says that residents and drivers detest the new bumps at Church Road, which links Upper Howsell Road and Lower Howsell Road.

She said: “There are seven of them, and they are too steep and too close together. A 20mph limit has been put in place as well. When the cars go over the bumps, there is a real jerk. My elderly customers really hate it and a lot of them ask me to avoid Church Road.

“There is the problem of noise as well, especially at night. Residents say that when the wheels of cars and lorries go over the bumps, it makes lot of noise and some say they can’t sleep because of it.

“It’s no good for cars either. It’s wrecking them when the wheels go over the bumps and hit the road surface. I know there has to be traffic calming, but these speed bumps are just wrong.”

Nick Pomeroy of Malvern Link, who uses the road frequently, said: "If they were the regular type of speed bump that goes all the way across the road, that would be fine.

"But you see drivers weaving around all over the place trying to get their wheels either side of them. There are going to be accidents."

A county council spokesman said: “These speed bumps were installed in Church Road to support the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, including those travelling to school and other amenities in the area.

“The speed bumps have been made to Department for Transport specifications.”
