A CASH dispenser user has spoken of his amazement and relief after £500 he accidentally left was taken from the machine and handed straight into the bank.

Clive Smith is now offering a reward to the man whose integrity saved him from being considerably out of pocket.

The lorry driver, of Gresham Road, Dines Green, Worcester, said: "Considering all the yobbos hanging around, it is good to know there are still decent people about. Anyone could have just taken the money and walked away. It was ready cash with no comeback."

Mr Smith, aged 61, had gone to the cash machine outside Barclays, Worcester High Street, at lunchtime on Friday, September 7.

He said: "I was hoping to take out £550. I put in £550 and it came up £50. The machine seemed to be playing up so I cancelled the transaction."

However, after receiving a mini-statement earlier this week, he found his account registering a £500 withdrawal and got in touch with Barclays.

He said: "I was very worried but the bank rang me up to tell me that the money had been handed straight back in and is now back in my account."

The bank told him that a man was the honest citizen.

Mr Smith said: "I would like to give him some kind of reward for saving me so much trouble."

A Barclays spokesman said: "Isn't it reassuring there are still genuine and honest people living in our country who, despite what we hear, are not just out to make a quick buck? This is a great reflection of the honesty of our customers at High Street, Worcester."
