MEMBERS of Worcestershire Junior Chess Academy celebrated a year of success at their awards ceremony.

Following the final of the Captain's Challenge Cup on and a charity quiz club co-ordinator Andrew Moore gave an entertaining report, the 2006-2007 season having been the best yet for the three-year-old club with many of its members having achieved outstanding results in club, county and national championships.

Star of the show was Ashley Davis from Redditch who has won or performed exceptionally well in a whole host of tournaments and awards over the past 12 months, culminating in him being awarded the prestigious WJCA A.P.Moore Player of the Year shield.

Worcester's Adam Field received the WJCA Most Improved Player of the Year award.

A whole host of other trophies, medals and certificates were handed out to club members during the ceremony on Saturday, September 8.

Ben Jones was elected Division One Player's Player - Stefan Weaver and Adam Field were runners up - and Division 2 Player's Player went to Ashley Davis with Matthew Robinson and Kieran Jeffrey as runners up.

Ben Jones was elected Junior Club Captain and Ashley Davis as Vice Captain with Jeremy Greenow being awarded a special Honorary Vice Captaincy in recognition of his services to the club.

Retiring Junior Captain Alaric Stephen was appointed Honorary Vice President and also received the Worcestershire Junior County Player of the Year award.

The Worcestershire Junior Chess Academy meets every Saturday morning (term time) at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church Hall, 10 Bransford Road, St Johns, Worcester from 10am to 12noon and is open to all youngsters whatever the level of their experience.
