KEEN young sports players at a Worcester school are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the county's cricketing heros after receiving a special donation.

Warndon Primary School, in Edgeworth Close, has taken delivery of an urban cricket set' from the city's MP Mike Foster.

It is now hoped that the school will take up the sport, and produce players for the Worcestershire Royals, who won the Pro40 title last week, or even, one day, for England.

Mr Foster said: "Npower, which sponsors the England cricket team, donated equipment to MPs who have an interest in cricket.

"Then it was just a case of finding the right home for the equipment, which I decided was Warndon Primary School.

"I want the next round of England cricketers to come from the fields of Worcester."

Mr Foster said he chose the school because of its recent "excellent" set of Key Stage Two results and because he believed students there deserved them.

"The school is set in a very challenging area educationally and I was delighted to hear the students say with such pride that they believed they were the best students in Worcester, their teachers were the best, and generally they thought their school was best.

"Npower should be congratulated for making these kits available and encouraging the children to take up cricket."

Monika Wadeson-Wilcox, headteacher at the school, said she was delighted to have received the equipment.

"We were thrilled that Mike Foster chose our school to give the equipment to," she said.

"We are very sporty here and recently received our healthy schools award. The pupils were all very excited to have the equipment and we will be putting it to very good use."

Warndon Primary School was opened in October last year following a merger between the infants and junior schools.
